Why do we celebrate Easter?

Why do we celebrate Easter? What does Easter mean to you? We celebrate Easter because it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some may ask, “So what?” Why is it important that Jesus rose from the dead? Jesus predicted this miracle ahead of time as proof that He is the Son of God. At present we are experiencing a journey through Lent. A journey that has given us challenges, a journey showing us God’s unconditional love, a journey showing us God’s abundance, a journey showing us an example of humble obedience that does not count the cost. This journey shows a Servant King, a paradox of words. Jesus had been preparing himself, but the people were not listening, nor were they prepared for what was to come. Jesus was different - He was humble, obedient, and committed to the point of death. Jesus’ entry into the great city – Jerusalem was anything but triumphant. Jesus is running straight into a situation where he will be rejected, where he will suffer and die. It’s important to keep in mind that, at this time, the Jews were preparing to celebrate the Passover. This was an annual event that focussed on the Exodus and Israel’s liberation from captivity in Egypt, the Passover fostered nationalistic feelings among the people and a longing to be free from Roman domination. Jesus’ way of peace offers a way forward for communities around the world who are embroiled in conflict. Are we helping in the offering of a way forward for our Society, for our conflicted world?
