Live One Love

Religion is complicated. It can put us off talking to our friends about it. But it is actually quite simple to say how Christianity works and how our friends can join in.

Christianity gets most complicated when it gets into positions of power or when it gets to be an old habit that you take for granted. If you read any Facebook, Christianity gets outright weird when it stands off from normal life or when it gets reduced to a system of rules and rituals. That is not what Jesus taught.

Like us, Jesus also thought that religion was way too complicated. In this story, he shows that anyone can live Christianity beautifully. It is all about one particular thing that even a child can do:
Matthew 22:34-40: “An expert in Biblical Law tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

In that one story, Jesus brought together two laws from his beloved Jewish Bible and turned them into a Love that gives Life (not rules and ritual). It is that simple.

So now, Jesus says that we need to nurture One Love. This is how God can flow into us and overflow through us to our world. Living that One Love is in fact the very reason we are alive. And because God is all about love and not compliance, we do have to choose it. As he said: “Do this and you shall live.” (Luke 10.28)
